For years, enthusiasts feared the days of the AMG V8 were numbered.
Stricter emissions regulations, electrification and changing market demands appeared destined to push one of the automotive world’s most celebrated engines into history. Yet Mercedes-AMG has chosen a different path.
With the unveiling of the new 2027 GLE 63 S and GLS 63, Affalterbach has reaffirmed its commitment to high-performance luxury SUVs powered by eight cylinders. More importantly, it has introduced a significantly revised version of its iconic 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, ensuring that two of AMG’s most important models remain true to their identity while embracing the next chapter of performance technology.
A New Era for the AMG V8

At the heart of both models lies the latest evolution of AMG’s renowned M177 engine.
While the displacement remains unchanged at 4.0 liters, the powertrain has undergone a substantial transformation. The revised M177 Evo introduces a flat-plane crankshaft configuration, a solution more commonly associated with exotic sports cars and racing engines than large luxury SUVs. Combined with updated turbochargers, revised intake and exhaust systems, improved fuel injection and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, the result is a powerplant that feels both familiar and entirely new.
Output remains an impressive 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque, while the integrated starter-generator contributes an additional boost during acceleration. Yet the story is not simply about numbers. AMG engineers have focused on improving responsiveness, drivability and efficiency, ensuring the V8 continues to meet increasingly demanding global regulations without sacrificing character.
Two Interpretations of the Same Philosophy
Although they share their powertrain and much of their technology, the GLE 63 S and GLS 63 serve very different purposes.

The GLE 63 S remains the athlete of the family.
Available in both SUV and Coupe form, it combines supercar-rivalling acceleration with the agility expected from AMG’s performance-focused engineering team. Mercedes-AMG claims a 0-60 mph sprint of approximately 3.6 seconds, placing it firmly among the fastest luxury SUVs on the market today.
The GLS 63, meanwhile, embraces a different role.

Often described as the “S-Class of SUVs,” it delivers the same 603-horsepower powertrain within a far larger and more luxurious package. Despite its size, the flagship SUV still reaches 60 mph in approximately 3.9 seconds while offering the space, comfort and refinement expected from Mercedes-Benz’s largest performance SUV.

Evolution Rather Than Revolution
Visually, AMG has chosen refinement over reinvention.
Both models receive revised front fascias featuring updated AMG-specific grilles, redesigned lighting signatures and subtle aerodynamic improvements. The changes are immediately recognizable to enthusiasts but remain faithful to the established identity of both vehicles.

The GLE adopts a sharper and more technical appearance, reinforcing its sporting credentials, while the GLS emphasizes presence and sophistication. New wheel designs, expanded MANUFAKTUR paint options and additional personalization possibilities allow customers to tailor their vehicles to an even greater degree than before.
The result is exactly what many AMG clients expect: a design evolution that enhances rather than replaces a successful formula.
Luxury Meets Performance Technology
Beneath the bodywork, both vehicles continue to showcase AMG’s ability to blend performance and comfort.

Adaptive air suspension remains standard, working alongside AMG Active Ride Control systems designed to minimize body roll while preserving ride quality. Rear-biased all-wheel drive, electronically controlled differentials and multiple drive modes allow the vehicles to transition seamlessly between relaxed grand tourers and high-performance machines.
The GLS in particular highlights how far the luxury SUV segment has evolved. Despite weighing considerably more than many performance sedans, it delivers a level of composure and stability that would have seemed unimaginable only a decade ago.
A New Digital Environment

Inside, Mercedes-Benz continues its shift toward a more connected and technology-focused luxury experience.
Both models benefit from the latest generation of infotainment technology powered by MB.OS, the company’s new operating system architecture. Enhanced connectivity, over-the-air updates, improved voice functionality and revised digital displays create an environment that feels more sophisticated than ever.
Importantly, AMG has also responded to customer feedback. The latest steering wheel incorporates revised physical controls, balancing digital convenience with the tactile interaction many owners still prefer. Premium materials, bespoke trim options and expanded customization possibilities ensure that luxury remains every bit as important as performance.

Why These SUVs Matter
The significance of the new GLE 63 S and GLS 63 extends beyond their performance figures.
These vehicles represent something increasingly rare within the automotive industry: confidence in the continued relevance of the V8 engine.

Rather than abandoning internal combustion entirely, Mercedes-AMG has chosen to evolve it. The adoption of a flat-plane crankshaft, mild-hybrid assistance and extensive engineering refinements demonstrates that performance and regulatory compliance do not necessarily have to exist in conflict.
For AMG enthusiasts, that decision matters.
The V8 is not merely a powertrain.
It is part of the brand’s identity.

The Future of Performance Luxury
The luxury SUV market has become one of the most fiercely contested segments in the automotive world. Rivals from Bentley, Lamborghini, Porsche, Aston Martin and BMW continue to raise expectations regarding performance, technology and exclusivity.
The new GLE 63 S and GLS 63 demonstrate that Mercedes-AMG has no intention of surrendering its place among the segment’s leaders.

They are faster, more sophisticated and more technologically advanced than their predecessors, yet they remain unmistakably AMG. Beneath the luxury, the technology and the digital interfaces lies the same philosophy that has defined Affalterbach for decades: extraordinary performance delivered with everyday usability.
Most importantly, they prove that there is still life left in the AMG V8.
And for many enthusiasts, that may be the most important news of all.
